Educator, media specialist, and writer Mary Hogarth MD of The Magazine Expert Ltd has more than 20 years industry experience, including her role as Managing Editor of Writers International Ltd overseeing two national magazines.
Her practice specialises in new title launches, relaunches, audience engagement, editorial development and building sustainable business strategies. A keen member of the publishing community, she serves as a facilitator on the International Magazine Centre’s Hive events and is a judge on The Publisher Podcast Awards.
As an educator, Mary currently has a fractional post as a Senior Lecturer in Journalism at Bournemouth University and is a HEA Senior Fellow. Mary left her role as Head of Features Journalism at Solent University to establish her consultancy practice in 2015.
To date, she has written numerous articles and authored three books - How To Launch A Magazine In This Digital Age (Bloomsbury, 2014), Business Strategies for Magazine Publishing (Routledge, 2018) and Writing Feature Articles (Routledge, 2019).
Recently, Mary has embarked on a PhD at Bournemouth University investigating sustainable business models in magazine publishing. Her interests also include sustainable publishing strategies and developing pedagogical practices to enhance employability. Her work has been presented at conferences including Mapping the Magazine 5 (Chicago, 2018), the AJE Magazine Conference at Edinburgh Napier (2019) and Mapping the Magazine 6 (virtual, 2020).
